Gastroenterology
The Gastroenterology Service at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre is a highly specialized, multidisciplinary unit dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the digestive system, liver, pancreas and biliary tract. As part of South Africa’s only private academic hospital, the service combines clinical excellence, advanced technology and academic expertise to deliver world-class, patient-centred care.
The multidisciplinary team comprises specialist gastroenterologists, hepatologists and surgical gastroenterologists who work collaboratively with radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, dieticians and transplant specialists to achieve optimal outcomes for patients with routine and complex gastrointestinal conditions.
A cornerstone of the service is its advanced endoscopy unit, which provides a full spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, capsule endoscopy, and double balloon enteroscopy as well as specialized therapeutic interventions such as polypectomy, dilatation, variceal banding and endoscopic mucosal resection.
A key strength of the gastroenterology service is the close integration with the hospitals’ renowned hepatobiliary and transplant programs. The centre plays a pivotal role in the management of patients with advanced liver disease, offering access to liver transplantation and complex hepatobiliary care.
The gastroenterology service is actively involved in teaching, training and research which ensures that care is informed by the latest evidence and innovations in the field, while contributing to the development of future specialists in the field.
Hepatology
At Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, the Hepatology service provides expert, comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic liver disease. The unit is recognized for its depth of expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and integration with one of South Africa’s foremost liver transplant programs.
Our team manages the full spectrum of liver conditions including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and its complications, autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases, metabolic liver disorders, and liver tumours. We also provide specialised care for patients with advanced liver diseases, including portal hypertension, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy and acute liver failure.
The unit offers access to advanced diagnostics and interventions which allow patients to benefit from evidence-based treatment protocols.
The hepatology unit is well known for its close collaboration with transplant surgeons, radiologists, intensivists, dieticians and allied healthcare professionals which ensures a seamless, patient-centred pathway from initial diagnosis and medical management through to transplant assessment, surgery and long-tern follow up.

Dr Victoria Stephen is a Specialist Emergency Physician and Intensivist. She completed her fellowship training in critical care at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in 2022. She earned both the certificate of Critical Care (South Africa) and the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC).
Dr Stephen is dedicated to advancing patient-focused, compassionate, high quality critical care and enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary team. Her interests in critical care include ventilation, ultrasound and diagnostics, toxicology and trauma.

Dr Adams is a Physician and Consultant Endocrinologist with experience in diagnosing and treating hormone-related conditions. She specializes in managing complex endocrine disorders. Known for her compassionate approach and sharp clinical insight, she combines evidence-based medicine with personalized care to help patients regain hormonal balance and improve their quality of life.
She earned her under- and post-graduate medical degrees from Wits University and was awarded the national medal for her specialist training.
Beyond private practice, Dr Adams is a passionate educator who holds a consultant position at an academic tertiary public hospital where she contributes to initiatives focused on diabetes and obesity awareness and prevention, research, student and registrar training.
When she’s not in scrubs, she enjoys hiking, nursing plants, and mentoring young women in medicine.

Dr Amanda Visagie is a specialist dermatologist holding a Fellowship in Dermatology (FC Derm) and a Master’s Degree in Dermatology (MMed) from the University of the Witwatersrand as well as a MBChB (UFS) and a diploma in HIV Management.
Her practice is focused on delivering high-quality, patient –centred dermatological care for both children and adults.
Driven by a deep passion for skin health, Dr Visagie is dedicated to evidence-based medicine and the pursuit of clinical excellence. She remains actively engaged in ongoing professional development and is committed to helping patients achieve healthy, confident skin through personalised and scientifically grounded treatment plans.
She has a special interest in both medical and cosmetic dermatology.
We are a dynamic physiotherapy team based at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Our focus is on holistic patient management based on evidence-based practice.
Our team comprises many enthusiastic and passionate physiotherapists with a multitude ofspecial interests. Our in-patient treatments focus on cardio-respiratory rehab and early rehabilitation within the ICU as well as treating orthopaedic and paediatric patients in the wards.
We work within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the best patient experience and care.
Dr Khan specialized as an orthopedic surgeon at University of Witwatersrand in 2003. He worked as a consultant in the department of orthopedic surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and part time private practice at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Center Parktown since 2003 to 2022. He resigned from public sector in 2022 and started full time practice at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Center.
Dr Khan has a particular interest in Spine surgery and Lower Limb Joint Replacement. He deals with the following in Spine Surgery

He did his masters in minimally invasive spine surgery at University of Witwatersrand Johannesburg due to his special interest in muscle preservation techniques.
Dr Khan has keen interest in knee and hip replacement surgery and has been doing these procedures since 2003 to date.
Vuyo Soldati is a subspecialist colorectal surgeon. He works as a consultant at the Christ Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Colorectal Unit and has now joined Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre Colorectal Unit.
Vuyo completed his undergraduate training at the university of Cape Town in 2010. He started his surgical training as a Medical Officer in Pietermaritzburg. He then returned to UCT where he completed his registrar training as a General Surgeon in 2021 and was awarded his MMED with distinction. He stayed on at UCT and completed his Subspecialist training in Colorectal Surgery in 2023.
Vuyo is from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape and grew up a very keen sportsman, especially rugby and cricket, having represented his province at cricket at all age groups. He is married to Qhawekazi who is a Paediatric Surgeon and has 2 children. Vuyo enjoys a game of Padel or Touch Rugby in his spare time.

He trained at the Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was a Specialist Nuclear Physician and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. He is a member of numerous international professional bodies, was the Scientific Chairman of the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology until 2010, and is a member of the International Advisory Board of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.
Prof. Libhaber was awarded his PhD degree in Physiology from the University of the Witwatersrand and Associate Professor of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and appointed Honorary Professor at the School of Physiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2019. Has published extensively in the field of cardiology and cardiovascular physiology and has frequently been invited lecturer and chairperson in local and international meetings and conferences.

I am a Nuclear Physician who is passionate about nuclear medicine imaging, therapy and education. I engage with international colleagues as the immediate past president of the World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNMB) and serve as an expert consultant to the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA). On national level I am the past president of the SA Society for Nuclear Medicine and the SA Association of Nuclear Physicians, still serving as executive board member of the Association of Nuclear Physicians. I am actively involved in several multidisciplinary teams and tumours boards.
My main interests lie in oncology imaging, nuclear medicine therapy (eg radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer, PRRT for neuroendocrine tumours, pheochromocytoma, paraganglioma and neuroblastoma, as well as PSMA therapy for castrate resistant prostate cancer), endocrinology and paediatrics.
I believe in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, to provide quality service to doctors and patients alike, to be compassionate and above all to be kind.

A Paediatric Endocrinologist and Diabetologist is a doctor who specializes in the function of the glands and hormones in a child’s body. Some of the major endocrine glands include the pituitary and hypothalamus, the thyroid and parathyroid, adrenal glands, gonads (testes and ovaries) and the pancreas. Endocrine disorders can result from imbalances, deficiencies, excesses and alterations of timing resulting in abnormalities of growth, thyroid function, puberty, weight and diabetes.
Abnormalities in these systems can have short- and long-term health implications. Fortunately, expertise and effective therapies are available for all these endocrine disorders at our practice.

Dr. Naima Hargey is a specialist Dermatologist with extensive training and expertise in the field of dermatology. She completed her undergraduate medical degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT, 2010), where she was honoured with a Gold Medal Award for her outstanding academic performance in Dermatology. Dr. Hargey furthered her education by obtaining her Fellowship in Dermatology from CMSA (FCDerm, 2022), also receiving a Gold Medal for her achievements in this area. She completed her Master of Medicine (MMED) from Wits University.
Dr. Hargey specialises in the treatment of a wide range of dermatological conditions, including medical, surgical, cosmetic, and paediatric dermatology.
She is also now able to offer mole scanning to her patients. A mole scan, also known as mole mapping or skin cancer screening, is a procedure that uses high-resolution digital imaging to track changes in moles over time. It helps detect melanoma and other skin cancers early by creating a detailed photographic record of the entire skin surface. This allows dermatologists to monitor changes in moles and identify any that may be cancerous.
Her patient-centred approach is characterised by attentive care and a deep commitment to understanding the unique needs of each individual. She believes in fostering strong relationships with her patients, ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout their treatment journey.

Professor Christos Profyris is academic Head of Neurosurgery at the University of Witwatersrand.
He completed his medical degree with Distinction at the University of Oxford, England. He completed his neurosurgical training at the University of Witwatersrand and achieved his Neurosurgery Fellowship qualification from the College of Medicine of South Africa. Prof. Profyris completed the Charles Teo Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Fellowship under Professor Charles Teo I Sydney, Australia.
Prof. Profyris has a special interest in the application of keyhole and endoscopic techniques to vascular, skull base, pituitary and neuro-oncological procedures.

Dr. Beringer received her medical degree from the University of the Free State in 2007. She qualified as a general paediatrician in 2015, and completed her subspeciality in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in 2018. She treats childhood cancers (leukaemia, lymphomas, embryonic tumours), and has a special interest in genetic blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia and haemophilia. Dr. Beringer’s career goal is to contribute to the better understanding and management of childhood malignancies, as this will improve the childhood cancer overall survival rates. To do so, she is interested in academic research and the dissemination thereof. Clinical practice, however, remains her ultimate passion and priority. She offers a warm, inviting environment in which the whole family is attended to.

Dr Kate Bennett is a Paediatric Oncologist who qualified first as a Paediatrician in 2009 and then as a Paediatric Oncologist in 2011. Dr. Bennett is committed to offering each patient personalised care and unparalleled compassion in a friendly environment. Dr Keketso Mopeli is a Specialist Paediatric Pulmonologist from Johannesburg who specialises in the holistic care of children with respiratory conditions. She investigates and treats the causes of chronic cough and other chronic lung conditions such as asthma. She does not just treat the child’s medical condition but also supports parents to better manage the condition in their environment. Dr Mopeli studied medicine at The University of Witwatersrand and graduated in 2007. She furthered her studies again through Wits University and graduated in the speciality of paediatrics in 2016.

Dr Verwey established and runs the paediatric pulmonology unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. He is the first elected Head of Division: Paediatric Pulmonology at the University of the Witwatersrand Faculty of Health Sciences. He completed his PhD investigating the long-term sequelae of viral infections on the developing lung of the child and has over 40 research articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals. He is on the executive councils of the South African Thoracic Society, the National Asthma Education Programme and the Pan-African Thoracic Society. He is happy when he is on his bicycle or spending time at home with his family.

Dr Faller is a Paediatric Rheumatologist specializing in treating musculoskeletal problems in children up to and including the age of sixteen. Dr. Faller completed her undergraduate medical training at University of Witwatersrand in 1992 and her fellowship in Paediatrics in 1999. She also holds certification in Basic and Advanced Immunology (Wits 2007), a Masters degree in Paediatrics (Wits 2006) and a Diploma in Child Health, Paediatrics (Royal College of Medicine, London 1996). After specializing in Paediatric Rheumatology at Wits, she spent time in the Paediatric Rheumatology Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. She has published work on SLE, childhood Polyarthritis Nodosa, Juvenile Dermomyositis and improving care for children in Rheumatology and she continues to be active in research. I am a South African qualified ENT Surgeon. I competed a Clinical Fellowship in Paediatric ENT Surgery at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand. My Fellowship gave me a deeper understanding in the paediatric component in ENT surgery. I also learnt different approaches, and gained confidence in airway pathologies. Paediatric patients are not small adults and therefore deserve and benefit greatly from a clinician that prioritises them, understands them and takes the time to communicate frequently with their families.

After completing his internship and community service in South Africa, Dr Goldstein completed basic surgical training at St Mary’s Hospital in London (UK) and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). He returned to South Africa to undergo post graduate orthopaedic training, and received the FCS(SA)Ortho qualification with distinction in 2012 (recipient of the JM Edelstein gold medal). After working as a lower limb trauma consultant at Charlotte Maxeke JHB Academic Hospital, Dr Goldstein joined Professor Schepers and underwent a two-year dedicated arthroplasty fellowship.

Dr. Sikhauli is a fellowship director and head of the clinical Arthroplasty unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and an assistant HOD of Orthopaedics at Wits University. He is actively involved in the academic training of orthopaedic registrars and hip and knee Fellows. He is an accomplished surgeon with a special interest in revision joint replacements. He is a member of the South African Orthopaedic Association and the South Africa Arthroplasty Society. He is well published and a regular presenter at orthopaedic congresses.

Dr Grant Biddulph is an Orthopaedic surgeon who specialised at Wits University. He has worked at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital and Baragwanath hospital in the orthopaedic department super specialising in hand surgery. He is currently a consultant in the Hand Unit at Baragwanath hospital. During this time he has gained experience in all facets of hand surgery and has also attended local and international courses and congresses where he regularly presents lectures and teaching sessions.

Dr. Candice Truda is an Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a special interest in shoulder and knee surgery. She also enjoys treating sports injuries and working on soft tissue (ligamentous) injuries and pathologies. During her clinical training Dr Truda gained a lot of experience working at some of South Africa’s busiest public hospitals, as well as a year spent at hospitals in London, where her work included trauma orthopaedics. After qualifying as an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University of Witwatersrand in 2007, Dr Truda worked at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Academic Hospital for 7 years, 5 of which were spent in the Sport and General Unit where she gained practical and theoretical knowledge in areas of shoulder, knee and foot surgery. She spent a lot of time on arthroscopic and soft tissue work, and also gained experience in arthroplasty. Dr Truda is now in private practice at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre. She is also currently doing research in septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, chronic knee dislocations and hallux interphalangeus.

Dr Dudgeon is a young Pulmonologist with an interest in Critical care, solid organ transplantation and pulmonary hypertension. She is passionate about providing high-quality, evidence-based compassionate medical care to every patient she sees. She completed her specialist training in 2013 and her sub-specialty in Pulmonology in 2016. She then joined the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in 2017 as a Fellow in Critical Care in order to gain access to first world training and expand her knowledge and expertise. She joined the pre-operative assessment clinic, which specialises in optimisation of patients before elective surgery. She has also developed an interest in solid organ transplantation, including lung transplantation, and plans to embark on research into pulmonary arterial hypertension. “I feel I have found the ideal working environment at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, where we provide evidence-based multi-disciplinary care to a wide variety of medical and surgical patients from all parts of the country. “I experienced and learned from both a resource constrained environment, the public health sector, as well as from a world-class medical facility in Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) – not many subspecialists have this opportunity” On rotation through the WDGMC’s Intensive Care Unit during her specialist medical training, Dr Liezl Brand found the ideal place to sub-specialize in Pulmonology. WDGMC’s multidisciplinary environment, where medical professionals work as a team, and the wide range of challenging patient cases referred to the hospital, made her decision an easy one. “I knew that I wanted to be part of this…” Dr. Brand has an established her Pulmonology practice at the hospital and she is also part of the highly skilled medical team managing patients in the Intensive Care and High Care Units. Both of these Units offer the highest standard of care and support to complicated elective surgical and critically ill patients. The ICU has developed into a world-class unit and has become the preferred referral facility for solid organ transplantation, managing complex gastroenterology and hepato-biliary pathology and treating end-stage liver disease. Dr Lala specializes in advanced endoscopic procedures including, the removal of precancerous and early cancers in the gastrointestinal tract (EMR, ESD, FTR), the endoscopic treatment of motility disorders (POEM, G-POEM, Z-POEM) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

Dr. Barrow is a consultant gastroenterologist trained at the University of Witwatersrand, with a special interest in interventional endoscopy including double balloon endoscopy (DBE) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). He also has extensive clinical and research experience in inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), celiac disease, oesophageal motility disorders and GERD.

I am a specialist colorectal surgeon in independant private practice. Since 2010 I have been involved in the establishment of the WDGMC Colorectal Unit. Our aim as a private training unit, is to train the next generation of specialist colorectal surgeons. Prof Willy Vangu is a Chief Specialist, Full Professor, and Head of Nuclear Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, overseeing Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospitals. He also leads the Department of Radiation Sciences and serves as Acting Head of the School of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, since 1 January to date. Holding an MD, MMed, MSc, and PhD, Prof Vangu has over 30 years of experience in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. He pioneered several advancements in South Africa, including PET imaging, radiolabelled antibody therapy, and targeted radionuclide treatments. A dedicated educator, he has supervised over 40 Masters degrees and several PhD students, shaping nuclear medicine in South Africa and beyond.
Internationally recognized, he has delivered keynote addresses, published extensively, and received numerous awards, including the 2020 Faculty of Health Sciences Gold Medal. In 2024, he was elected to the Royal College of Medicine of London for his contribution to medicine and was the same year a co-president of the ‘International Breast Cancer Update’ meeting in Dubai, UEA.

Dr. Butler then spent a further 2 years training as a Sub-specialist Geriatrician with the assistance of a Discovery Foundation Award, dividing her training between Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre and Helen Joseph Hospital – the only training sites in Gauteng. She has published scientific articles on delirium and osteoporosis among other topics. Dr. Butler is currently the Vice President of the South African Geriatrics Society.

Hayley de Wet is one of a few specialist physicians with a passion for bone health and osteoporosis. Hayley completed both her specialist training and attained her Masters research degree through Wits University, for which she received distinction and an award in 2010. Hayley continues to attend both national and international bone orientated congresses to ensure her patients receive up to date care. She has an outpatient based practice with a special interest in women’s health, bone health and disease prevention.

Prof. Wade is a specialist physician and endocrinologist. After completing her medical degree with honours at the University of the West Indies, she obtained a DPhil (PhD) from Oxford University in the United Kingdom; her doctoral work focused on the use of blood glucose self-monitoring in patients with type-2 diabetes who are not using insulin. She subsequently completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Centre and fellowship training in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Pennsylvania, both in the United States. Prof. Wade is an active researcher with over 60 peer-reviewed publications. She received an Emerging Global Leader award from the National Institute of Health in the United States to support her research into endocrine and metabolic diseases in lower and middle income countries. In her clinical practice she sees patients with all types of endocrine disorders and focuses on delivering patient-centred care.

Dr Silindile Sibisi is a specialist dermatologist in both public and private sectors in Johannesburg. She graduated from the University of Kwa Zulu Natal, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. A qualified Fellow of the College of Dermatologists, having qualified cum laude and received the Peter Smith Award in 2015. She also holds a Masters of Medicine degree in dermatology, through the University of Witwatersrand. Dr Sibisi gained a wealth of experience during her training at three major state hospitals in Johannesburg. She is involved in Clinical Research and has contributed a chapter in a dermatology textbook on Pityriasis Rosea.

Dr John Tilley is a specialist physician and intensivist. He is currently the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Dr Tilley completed his undergraduate degree at Wits University, followed by his specialisation in internal medicine and completed his sub-specialist training in critical care. He has a special interest in clinical informatics and decision support systems.

I am Dr Nandipha Sigedle. I am a qualified paediatric oncologist. After qualifying as a paediatrician I worked in a liver transplant unit where I gained immense experience in solid organ transplant. I then went on to specialise in paediatric oncology. Post qualification I did fellowship in Stem cell transplant with Dr Jacqueline Thomson. I am currently a paediatric oncologist with special interest in Stem cell transplant as well as blood disorders.

Dr Jackie Thomson is a clinical haematologist whose main area of interest is the treatment of blood disorders/malignancies. She is an expert in bone marrow transplantation and stem cell transplantation. She is the first Transplant Program Director to be recognised by the European Bone Marrow Transplant Society by obtaining JACIE accreditation. She is passionate about improving patient outcomes and does so by following best practices and implementing quality systems of international standards.

I am a Clinical Haematologist. My main interests are bone marrow transplantation and CAR-T cells. I am currently doing research on auto stem cell transplant mobilization, harvest and Haploidentical stem cell transplants in South Africa especially in patients with donor specific antibodies. My ethos is to give the best possible therapy for my patients and going the extra mile.
