Professor Mohamed Haffejee has over 21 years of experience as a respected consultant urological surgeon actively involved as a clinician, mentor, teacher, academic and researcher. He is in full time private practice at the Donald Gordan Medical Centre. Prior to this he was the Chief Specialist Urologist at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital having devoted 25 years to state practice. In the management of prostate cancer he has the singular honour of being trained and accredited in multiple modalities including High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU), Brachytherapy and a fully accredited solo Robotic Surgeon. He is also a trained Greenlight Laser surgeon in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is his belief that patients should be empowered to make an informed evidence based decision after having been informed of all the options available in managing their disease, including all benefits and potential risks, tailored to their individual needs, expectations and unique cancer biology. To this end he has been instrumental in drawing up the South African Prostate Cancer Guidelines. He is part of a consultative multidisciplinary oncological team that includes experienced medical and radiation oncologists with state-of-the-art facilities. He is a proud alumnus of University of the Witwatersrand where he received his undergraduate medical degree in 1992, completed his postgraduate training in urology in 1999 and continued as Academic Head and Adjunct Professor of the Division of Urology at the University of the Witwatersrand since 2002. This is largest academic division of urology in Sub-Saharan Africa providing undergraduate and postgraduate training to both local graduates and from further afield in Africa.
