Zafar is a specialist surgical gastroenterologist, transplant surgeon, and advanced endoscopist. His practice encompasses complex hepatopancreaticoobiliary disease, liver and kidney transplantation, and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including EUS and ERCP. He is affiliated with Wits University and is recognised for his technical ability, clinical judgement, and a dedicated and compassionate approach to the care of patients with demanding surgical conditions.
He holds multiple qualifications and has undertaken international training in advanced endoscopy in Japan and Belgium, a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy at KU Leuven in Belgium, and a fellowship in liver surgery and abdominal organ transplantation from Leeds in the United Kingdom. In addition he holds a fellowship from the European Board of Surgery in Transplant Surgery. He brings substantial experience to the surgical and endoscopic management of complex disease, supported by many years of practice and broad clinical exposure.
Beyond his clinical work, he has served on the executive of the Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association of South Africa (HPBASA) and on the communication committee of the European‑-African Hepato‑-Pancreato‑-Biliary Association (EAHPBA), reflecting his engagement with the specialty at both national and international levels. He has authored multiple peer‑-reviewed journal articles and has dedicated a significant portion of his career to teaching and mentoring students, registrars, and fellows. His practice reflects a longstanding commitment to excellence, precision, and the development of the next generation of HPB and transplant surgeons.
