Dr Prakash Kathan is a healthcare practitioner, practicing as a Neurologist at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC), in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Dr Kathan has gained a lot of experience working for some of the busiest public hospitals in Africa. Dr Kathan completed his medical degree at Wits University in 2005.He completed his internship and community service, spent time in Anesthesiology obtaining a Diploma in Anesthesiology (CMSA). He then decided to pursue a career in Neurology, because was interested in understanding the human brain/nervous system, and grew to enjoy the assessment and treatment of neurological disorders. In 2013, after 13 years’ university education and clinical neurology training in association with Wits University, Dr Kathan graduated as a Fellow of Neurology, with the College of Medicine South Africa (CMSA). He registered as a specialist neurologist with the Health Professional Council of South Africa shortly thereafter. After supervising the care for all the Neurology patients at Helen Joseph Hospital in 2014, Dr Kathan was approached by the WDGMC to join their team of specialists and Sub-specialists. While Dr Kathan spends a lot of his time consulting and Electroencephalography (EEG), conducting Electrodiagnostic Studies (Nerve conduction studies and Electromyography), treating Headaches, he covers the full spectrum of Clinical Neurology. Dr Kathan assesses patients who have been referred to him, in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Dr Kathan’s treatment options vary depending on the neurological problem. He has completed the VIREPA (Virtual Epilepsy Academy) basic course, run by the International league against epilepsy (ILAE) in 2017 and the EEG online course in 2018 created in collaboration with the Neurological Association of South Africa, the World Federation of Neurology and the University of Cape Town.
